What is the Subject Matter of Christianity

Christianity is regarded as the dominant religion of the world in the 21st century.

It is a religion that is based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.

Although it is the most widely practiced religion in the world, it is broken down into different denominations sometimes referred to as sects.

The largest sects or groups in Christianity are the Eastern orthodox church, the Roman Catholics church, and the protestant church.

Christianity is a religion which is centered on the teachings as well as the life of Jesus and one of its key beliefs is that Jesus is the son of God who came to the world in human form in fulfilment of several prophesies which are clearly stated in the scriptures.

In as much as there are several beliefs which are shared among all Christians, a lot more beliefs which are not accepted by different groups of Christians abound.

The existence of these various beliefs which not all Christian groups share is one of the reasons for the different sects that about in Christianity today.

Regardless of the fact that there are many beliefs held by different Christian groups, every Christian group agrees that the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the foundation of the Christian faith.

The resurrection and the death of Jesus Christ is also regarded as the most important event in Christianity.

This, therefore, implies that the doctrines of most Christian groups irrespective of their differences have this in common.

Jesus Christ was crucified like a common criminal and died physically, he was buried like every other dead person would be.

However, unlike anyone in the history of the world, Jesus Christ rose again and this marked the beginning of Christianity.

Before ascending into heaven, Jesus Christ appeared to his disciples severally both in different groups and as a large group of up to 500 people.

There are quite some reasons why the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ are considered special events in Christianity.

Whilst a lot of these reasons are obvious, some of them are not very well known by some Christians.

Basically, some of the most important reasons why the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ are considered very important to Christianity are: they stand as proof that Jesus Christ has all power including power over death and life and can give eternal life to people.

What Really is Christianity

When the word “Christianity” is mentioned, what comes to the mind of most people is “one of the most popular religions in the world”.

Well, Christianity is many things to different people. To some, it is a religion and to others, it is a lifestyle.

Irrespective of what Christianity is to various people, true Christianity can only mean one thing and the only way to find out what Christianity exactly is to get to know what its subject  matter is.

That brings us to the million dollar question “does Christianity have a subject matter?

A lot of people might have never asked themselves this question and that is perhaps one of the reasons for the confusion which a lot of people have about what Christianity really is.

Now, about the question does Christianity have a subject matter?

Well, the answer to this question is emphatically yes.

What is the Subject Matter of Christianity

The subject matter of Christianity is simply living the life of Jesus Christ .

Christianity is all about Jesus Christ.

Although a lot of people, Christians and non Christians believe that Christianity is a religion, going by what the subject matter of Christianity is, it is quite glaring that Christianity is a lifestyle and not a religion.

Basically, religion is about ceremonies and rituals and Christianity is not about ceremonies at all, neither is it about rituals.

Now, you might ask, are there no ceremonies in Christianity?

Whilst it is absolutely true that there are ceremonies in Christianity, these ceremonies are not what Christianity is all about.

Religion, is all about man trying to get access to a supreme being and that is where rituals come into play.

Christianity, on the other hand is God reaching out to man. God did this by sending his son to reconcile man to him.

It is no news that Jesus Christ successfully fulfilled his purpose on earth.

Although his purpose on earth was fulfilled, it did not end there, the life of Jesus and the manner in which he lived on earth has was prolonged by his followers and this gave birth to Christianity.

Christianity is all about living like Christ and doing what he did while on earth.

It is about reconciling man to God. For anyone to refer to themselves as Christians, they have to be people that follow God through Jesus Christ and have surrendered their lives to his Lordship.

As soon as this is done, they no longer have the freedom to live for themselves.

Their lifestyle and the very essence of their being must be about doing what Christ would have them do.

The subject matter of Christianity can be summarized into five things. They are

  • Worship

Worship is man expressing his love for his maker and lord and that is exactly what Christ meant when he said “Thou shalt love the lord your God with all thy soul, with all thy heart and with all thy mind”.

In worship, the Christian is supposed to love God above every other thing that is in existence.

Spouse included. Worship involves seeking to honour God in all we do on a daily basis.

This involves  our relationships, our company, and our activities.

  • Fellowship

God did not make us for us to exist alone. He made us to exist with him and this can be done through fellowship.

Fellowship also involves every Christian being a member of a local assembly where everyone can be supported both physically and spiritually.

With fellowship, the individuals which have the lifestyle of Jesus as their daily goals can be encouraged

  • Discipleship

There is always room to get to know Jesus better.

As Christians, our walk with Jesus Christ is progressive. It is one that does not have an end.

“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, if ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed. And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

  • Ministry

Christianity involves service to God and to man. Service is what ministry is all about.

While on the face of the earth, that was what the life of Jesus was all about.

“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me”

  • Evangelism

Jesus came to the earth to reconcile man to God.

He did this successfully and has therefore given everyone that he reconciled back to God the ministry of reconciliation.

This can only be done through preaching the word.

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature”.

Who is a Christian

There could be lots of answers to the question who is a Christian.

To a couple of people, a Christian is someone with a name gotten from the bible, to some others, a Christian is someone that was born info a Christian home.

To a couple of other people, a Christian is someone that believes in the existence of one God and his Son Jesus Christ.

If a thousand people are asked who a Christian is, they might give a thousands different answers.

Some of the answers might be very far apart while some might be very similar to each other.

Based on the subject matter of Christianity, let’s get to know who a Christian is.

The word Christianity was first used in the bible. This simply means that the bible can give us an accurate answer of who a Christian is.

The first time the word Christian was mentioned in the bible was after the death, resurrection, and the ascension of Jesus Christ.

Also it was only made use of three times in the new testament.

“So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people.

The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.”

“Then Agrippa said to Paul, do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian.”

“However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed but praise god that you bear that name.”

Going by the bible passages above, it is quite obvious that all the times that people were called Christians in the new testament, they were called so because of their lifestyle which included activities and manner of communication were like those of Jesus Christ.

What Every Christian Believes

  • God made everything that is in existence

Every Christian beliefs that the world, the people in it and the entire universe were created by God.

This includes things that can be seen as well as things that cannot be seen.

  • Jesus is God’s son and is one with God

Lots of philosophers believe that indeed there was a man that lived and was called Jesus.

To a lot of people, he was just a good man, to some others, he was a prophet.

However, to Christians, Jesus Christ is the son of God and is also one with God.

Christians also believe that Jesus Christ came to earth to die for the sins of the world.

  • Jesus was born of a Virgin

Every Christian believes that Jesus Christ came into this world through the virgin Mary after being conceived of the holy Ghost.

  • Jesus Suffered and Was Crucified

Jesus Christ suffered for the sins of the world and was crucified after being accused of being a rebel against the Roman government of his day.

  • Jesus Died

After the crucifixion of Jesus was his death. The burial of Jesus in a tomb which was owned by a man known as Joseph of Arimathea also took place. Matt 27: 57-60

As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus.

Going to Pilate, he asked of Jesus body, and Pilate ordered that it he given to him.

Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloths and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock.

He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.

  • Jesus Resurrected

Jesus came back to life after defeating death.

  • Jesus ascended into heaven

“After the lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.

Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his words with signs that accompanied it.”

Just like the bible says, Jesus indeed ascended into heaven in physical form.

This occurred in front of his disciples.

  • Jesus will return to judge the world

At that time, the sign of the son of man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn.

They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory.

And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other

  • People can be saved by confessing their sins

That if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

For it is with your Heart that you believe and are justified and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.

  • Anyone can be saved

For other is no Jew and gentile- the same lord is lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him.
